Our Life's Purpose

It sounds so cliché when I say that the purpose of our lives is to love. But it is true. I am not talking about “love” like the world defines it. I am not talking about selfish love, but about love that sacrifices for the other. This last Sunday we celebrated the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity. For most of us our heads hurt when we think about God as one God, yet three persons. How can God be one yet three?

I once had a teacher in seminary that taught a class on the Holy Trinity. Her name is Dr. Turek. She was truly an inspiration. She told us that “we were created to share in the life of the Trinity. Our meaning and purpose in life is to share in God’s life. It is a life of perfect love and unity. The most important thing to know is that God is love. We were made for this love.” Our head’s don’t have to hurt as we are trying to comprehend this great mystery. What is important is that we know that God’s life is perfect love and we are made to share in that life. We are able to have a relationship with the Trinity because Jesus died for us. Jesus became like us so we can share in God’s life.

So I will say it once again for you. I know that I need reminding as well:

Your life’s purpose is to be with the Trinity forever. We are human. God is not human. God is Creator and Lord. But this is the amazing part. Jesus, who is God, took on our flesh so we can share in His Divinity. God became like us so we can be like Him. God has a plan for your life because he made you to share in the life of God in Heaven. The way to the life of God is to love like God.

We love like them when we love unselfishly. When we serve others, give our time away, and die to our selfishness. When we love our children when we don’t want to, when we love our spouses when it is hard, when we love people that frustrate us. We are meant to give our lives away in love and that is how we become united with God.

“Beloved, we are God’s children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” 1 John 3:2
