Finding God in Desperation: A Journey of Faith

A couple of years ago I encountered a couple in deep despair. They entered the church, their hearts heavy with fear as they faced the husband’s wife’s health issues She hadn’t attended church in over forty years, and he was a non-Catholic, feeling lost and questioning God’s existence.

In that moment, I realized they needed more than advice; they needed to encounter God. I invited them to join our Alpha program, a space for exploring the basics of faith in a welcoming community. Alpha offers individuals the chance to ask questions and discover who Jesus is without pressure or judgment.

As they attended the Alpha Course, I witnessed a remarkable transformation in the couple. They realized that God was actively involved in their lives, which changed their hearts and helped them find hope and purpose. Their doubts faded, and they embraced a newfound faith, leading the husband to become Catholic and share his testimony with others on their faith journey.

Just like Peter in the Gospels, who left everything to follow Jesus, this couple surrendered their fears and found hope. They realized that Jesus could fulfill their deepest longings.

As we reflect on our lives, let’s remember that Jesus is the answer to our deepest longings. He wants to fill our hearts with His love and purpose. If we can surrender our worries and embrace His call, we can experience the miraculous change that comes from truly following Him.

Take a moment this week to ask yourself:

  • What is holding me back from fully following Jesus?

  • What steps can I take to encounter Him more deeply?

TL;DR: A couple in despair joined the Alpha program, where they transformed their lives by realizing God’s active presence. They embraced newfound faith, leading the husband to become Catholic and share his testimony. Like Peter, they surrendered their fears and found hope in Jesus. Reflect on what holds you back from fully following Him.
